Meet Summersgill CPA Founder, Shannon Summersgill, CPA! Learn how her career evolved into running her own firm, what she attributes her success to, her favorite travel destination, and much more!
How did your career as a CPA and founder of Summersgill CPA take off?
My career started in Dallas, working in private accounting where I originally held my CPA license. After the birth of my second daughter, Isabella, we moved back to Louisiana, where I stayed home with my daughters for a couple years before returning to full-time work with a local public accounting firm. After much thought, encouragement from family, and my desire to have more flexibility with my schedule while my daughters were young, I decided to go into business on my own, and I’ve never looked back.
What do you attribute your firm’s success to most?
I think that much of our success is due to my amazing team and our focus on delivering excellent support and intentional guidance to every client.
What do you like best about your career and running a firm?
I love how my career choice and decision to run my own firm has given me the opportunity to empower others in our community to learn, grow and become leaders in our profession. Additionally, I love how technologically advanced we've become. We are using so many cool, forward-thinking tools and programs that have enhanced our service offerings, efficiency and communications with our clients. It is fun and exciting to be so far ahead!
Where is the best place you have traveled to and why?
The African Safari at the Sabi Sands Lodge in South Africa. We experienced the Big 5 – lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, and Cape buffalo—plus so many other animals. We went on a walking tour and were told, “If you make eye contact with an animal, don’t run…crouch down to get at eye level and remain still and calm or the animal may think you are challenging it and may come after you for attack!!” The animals were within reach of our open air jeep…it was truly the most amazing experience. We drank coffee with the animals at dawn and drank wine with the animals at dusk. I would love to go back.
What would you most like to tell yourself at age 13?
Johnson’s Baby Oil really shouldn’t be used as sunscreen.
What is your best business advisory related tip for businesses?
